How to Get Clean Product Photos on a White Background
A plain white background keeps attention on the product and makes a shop look tidy. Some marketplaces also insist on it. Amazon sellers, for example, are widely told that main product images need a pure white background, so check the current rules for wherever you sell.
You don’t need a studio. You need a decent photo and a tool that removes the background. The better the photo, the cleaner the cut-out, so a few minutes spent on setup will save time later.
What you need
- A phone with a clean camera lens
- A window with soft daylight
- A large sheet of white or plain paper
- A table
- Something to steady your phone, such as a stack of books
Taking a photo that cuts out well
Use contrast. Place a dark product on a light surface and a light product on a dark surface. Background removal struggles most when the subject and background are similar colours. A white mug on white paper is the hardest case, even though you want white at the end. Photograph it on a darker surface, then add the white background afterwards.
Use soft daylight. Stand near a window on a bright day, out of direct sun. Avoid the camera flash, which causes harsh shadows and glare. If one side looks dark, hold a sheet of white paper on that side to bounce some light back.
Keep the background plain. A sheet of paper or a clean wall works well. Curving a large sheet of paper up behind the product hides the line where the table meets the wall.
Keep the product sharp. Tap the product on your phone screen to focus. Blurry edges become messy edges.
Leave some space. Don’t let the product touch the edge of the frame. A tool can’t cut around something that isn’t fully in the picture.
Shoot straight on. Keep your phone level with the product so that its lines stay straight. Take a few shots from slightly different positions and pick the best one.
Removing the background
- Open the background remover and add your photo.
- Wait for the cut-out. The first time takes longer, because the tool has to download about 60 MB of AI files. Use Wi-Fi if you can.
- Choose white, another colour, or transparent.
- Download your PNG.
In our tests on a desktop computer, three photos each took about 3 to 5 seconds. A person, a car and an animal all came out cleanly. Older phones will be slower.
Zoom in and check the edges before you use the image. Look closely at thin parts, shiny surfaces, and holes such as cup handles, where a little background can stay behind. Automatic tools can make mistakes there, and on anything close in colour to the background.
Transparent or white?
| Use | Best choice |
|---|---|
| Store listing | White |
| Banner or advert | Transparent |
| Social media post | Transparent, placed on your brand colour |
| Printed flyer | Depends on the design, so keep both |
Save a transparent copy either way. It is the most flexible version to keep, and you won’t need to cut the product out again later.
Keeping images consistent
A shop looks more professional when its photos match. Try these simple habits:
- Use the same window and time of day for each session.
- Keep your phone at the same distance from each product.
- Make products fill a similar part of the frame.
- Use the same background colour across a collection.
Taking all your photos in one session makes this much easier.
Common problems and fixes
Part of the product disappeared. The product and background were probably too similar. Take the photo again on a contrasting surface.
A shadow stayed behind. Move the product away from the wall, soften the light, or shoot closer to the window.
The edges look rough. The original may be blurry or too small. Use a sharper, larger photo.
The product looks dull on white. Your original may be too dark. Take it again in brighter light rather than trying to fix it afterwards.
Keep your store fast
Background remover results are PNG files, which can be large. If your image has a solid background, convert it to JPG or WebP with our image compressor before you upload it, so your product pages stay quick to load. Keep the transparent PNG as your master copy, because JPG can’t store transparency.
Quick checklist
